Overview

Access to safe and dignified shelter remains one of the most urgent challenges facing vulnerable families in Somaliland. Many orphaned children and their caregivers live in temporary or unsafe structures made from basic materials that offer little protection from harsh weather conditions.

These living conditions expose families to health risks, insecurity, and instability, making it difficult for children to grow, learn, and thrive. Without a stable home, it becomes nearly impossible to achieve progress in education, health, or economic well-being.

At Horn Charity Organization (HCO), we believe that a safe home is not a luxury—it is a fundamental human need and the foundation for a dignified life.

Our Mission

The Shelter Program is designed to provide permanent, safe, and dignified housing for orphan families and the most vulnerable households in Somaliland. Through this initiative, we aim to replace unsafe living conditions with durable homes that restore security, dignity, and hope.

Our Housing Model

Each housing unit is carefully designed to meet basic family needs while ensuring durability, safety, and affordability.

House Specifications:

  • Structure: Built with bricks for strength and durability

  • Size: Constructed on a 6 × 12 meter plot

  • Layout Includes:

    • 2 Bedrooms

    • 1 Bathroom

    • 1 Kitchen

    • Small private yard

These homes are designed to provide a safe, functional, and family-friendly environment, suitable for orphan households and vulnerable families.

Cost Per House

The estimated cost of constructing one complete housing unit ranges between:

👉 $20,000 – $30,000 per house

This cost includes:

  • Construction materials

  • Labor and technical supervision

  • Basic finishing and essential fittings

Impact of a Safe Home

Providing a permanent home creates life-changing impact:

  • Protection & Safety: Families are shielded from harsh weather and unsafe conditions

  • Health Improvement: Reduced exposure to disease and environmental risks

  • Child Development: Children gain a stable environment to study and grow

  • Dignity & Stability: Families regain a sense of belonging and security

A home is more than a structure—it is the foundation for rebuilding lives.

Our approach ensures:
